Every month I can say the same thing, I LOVE BOOK CLUB. It is hard to pick a book. I know I worry about what if people do not like it. It happens. One person can absolutely love a book that someone else cannot finish. Same words, interpreted differently by each person. An author is like an artist. Putting the picture out there for us to look at, feel it, that is why I have a passion for books.
This is another unique book. The main character of the book is Christopher. The story is told from through him. Christopher has some type of autism, probably Augsburg's Syndrome. This made it hard to read but eventually brought the story home. A story told devoid of emotion is dry. Eventually, I felt Christopher. I had more of an understanding of his life.
One of the waiters that came to our table had read this book. He is studying autism. He gave some of his insights into the book. Book lovers share their passion. I think readers gravitate towards each other. Which does not explain how I am married to someone that does not read!
Two people in the club immediately liked the book. Most of the rest of us struggled with the book. I do not even know where I was in the book when reading it stopped being a struggle. We all enjoyed the discussion.
I am going to try to describe the story. Christopher knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. He hates the color yellow.
Christopher finds a neighbor dog was killed. Part of this story was his investigation of the death of the dog. During the investigation Christopher discovers things about his life and family. All of it is seen through the eyes and one dimensional views of Christopher.
I would not recommend this book to everyone. The OL did not make it through the book. That said, if you are someone interested in autism, you would probably enjoy the story. I gave the book a rating of 3. I gave the discussion a 4.
Downside of the evening: while I was enjoying a great dinner with The Page Turners, someone almost ripped my passenger side mirror off the door. It was just hanging by the wires. I'm sad. I like my little car. I hate to see her abused. This was a nice place to eat. Not a place teenagers go to dine. That means an adult probably did this. What makes an adult think it is fine to destroy someones property and walk away. Shame on you!
Next month we are reading, The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle. It is our newest member's pick. I read this book years ago and loved it. I have recommended it to many people. I am anxious to read it again. See if I still enjoy the book as much as I did the first time. Willie's Wife mentioned tonight that where we are in our lives dictates how we enjoy a book. The Page Turner's make profound statements like that all the time. We are a super deep group. Very wise too. We will see if where I am in my life I can still appreciate Tortilla Curtain. Read it along with us. Let me know if you like it.
Before I read that, I am reading the new Jodi Picoult book, Sing You Home!! It came with a CD. Songs that go with specific chapters. Stay tuned for that review.

The Kid will be VERY worked-up about the damage to the car. He will not be happy.
And I was one of the poor saps you convinced to read the 'Tortilla Curtain' and.... I Hated It!! Just in case your real life isn't depressing enough... now you can read about someone else's misery.
I too read Tortilla Curtain bc of you. I think discussing it with you after I read it made me appreciate it more. and living here in AZ, probably gave me a better insight to it as well. but I woudln't say it was an easy read. I remember it took me forever to get thru. In more world there are half stars, so i would've given it a 3.5.
my world, not more.
