In the last few years I have come to enjoy Jodi Picoult as an author. She usually has unique subjects. She surprises me with twists and turns. This book did not disappoint me. I was a bit disappointed that it did not keep me on the edge of my seat like a few of her books. Like most authors that become mainstream, I think it becomes difficult for them to write stories that are page turners.
This book came with a CD. The author worked with a musician to make a CD that flows with the book. There are specific songs that go with chapters. That did not work with me. When I start reading I do not want to stop and play a CD. It was an interesting idea, unique. Just does not work with my reading.
Zoe is a music therapist. Following some personal struggles her marriage ends. She meets a friend and the friendship goes into a relationship. Zoe's ex-husband becomes involved in a church that is very vocal in their beliefs and trying to change other people's beliefs. This story touches on homosexuality. Legal and personal challenges that are faced with homosexuality. Churches that judge people and their choices. Fertility problems. One of the very unique subjects was snowflake babies. Embryos that are frozen and what happens to the embryos.
These are some major subjects put into a fictional story. She touches on the tragedy of couples trying to conceive. The toll taken on them when the pregnancy ends in miscarriage. The subject of what happens to embryos that are not used vetro-fertilization. That is a subject I do not think I considered. It turns to when does life begin. It also gets into the ethics of freezing embryos.
I gave this book a 3. Really close to a 4. It needed to be shorter. That might have made it a 4. All in all an interesting read.
I am working on 5 days off. Only two to go. Thought I might have been able to get more reading done. Just has not happened. I hope to finish at least one more book before I go back to work on Tuesday.
