At Least We Had Conversation

The Page Turners met last night.  No cosmopolitans were killed in the making of our meeting.  There was plenty of conversation.  Delicious food.  Gossip.  We even managed to discuss the book.  We ate at an amazing restaurant that recently reopened in a new location.  Cafe Italia was so yummy.  That is saying a lot.  I do not use the word yummy.  The special was lasagna.  It was not only special, it was the best lasagna I have ever tasted.  I am not exaggerating when I say, it melted in my mouth.  The cheese was like nothing I have ever tasted.  Even the salad was delicious.  I ended the meal with an Italian Coffee.  Wish I would have had more time to enjoy it.  Very good.  If I were rich, I would eat there every often.
Our September book picked by The Dream Maker was, Conversations and Cosmopolitans by Robert and Jane Rave.  They are Mother and Son.  It is obvious that Robert got his sense of humor from his Mom.  They both have a light, interesting writing style.  Normally, I am not in love with books that jump from character to the next in chapters.  This book was an exception.  Maybe it is because I am a Mother.  I really enjoyed Jane's feelings regarding Robert and his life.
I liked that Jane brought her life choices and mistakes into the story.  Sharing that an early pre-marriage pregnancy made her feel like she had done something wrong.  She did not fit and feel comfortable in her life.  That analogy made so much sense.
We had a fantastic discussion.  We talked about what it must be like to come out and live in New York compared to living in the Midwest.  What it would have been like to come out 10-15 years ago in the Midwest.
We had a nice discussion from a book that is really a light read.  I recommend this book.  Nice to read a book that was set in Bloomington.  A place I called home (not happily) for over 30 years.  I rated the book a 4.  All around the book received 3.5 to 4 rating on a 5 point scale.  The discussion rated higher than the book.  We enjoy a book that gets us thinking and talking.
Good pick Dream Maker.  I am currently reading another book by Robert Rave, Spin.  Started out slow.  Now I am enjoying where the storey is going.  Robert needs to get some more books out there!  I like his writing.

I just finished Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs and Look Me In the Eye by John Elder Robison. The first is a memoir of Augusten's life from roughly five to nineteen and the second is a memoir written by his brother about living with Asperger's. WARNING: They do not grow up in a happy unicorn and rainbows kind of home. I'm now reading Burrough's memoir Dry about his life during and following rehab for alcoholism. Interesting reads (sort of along the lines of A Million Little Pieces), and I keep thinking that The Page Turners might have a good discussion after reading these selections. Burrough's tone and voice I find especially entertaining. Something about his writing style reminds me of you, Page Turner. Just a thought in case you run out of reading material!

Thanks Mrs. I read Running With Scissors quite awhile ago. I will have to check the others out.
Thanks for passing along reading ideas!
