I just finished the first book in the trilogy of Griffin & Sabine. This is the series my doctor recommended to me. Along with recommending I up the amount of Vitamin D3. She is not all about books. That is just my favorite part.
You cannot read these books on an electronic reader. If so, you will not get it. The books are as much or more about the illustrations as the writing. The author was an illustrator/artist before he wrote these books. When my doctor told me about this series she said she could not describe what it was about but I had to read them. I will try to describe what they are about.
Griffin is a male. He lives in London. He is an artist and creates handmade postcards. He went to art school. Sabine is female. She lives in the South Seas. One day while she is in the space between being awake and sleeping she sees a drawing in her mind. She knows what she is seeing is real. She continues to see artwork. She figures out she is watching an artist create drawings. One day she is able to figure out who the artist is. It is Griffin. She begins a correspondence with Griffin.
Griffin accepts what Sabine says is true. She is able to describe drawings he has done that were never seen by anyone but himself. They make sure it is not possible they are twins. Griffin cannot see Sabine's work. Sabine is also an artist.
That's the story. What I wrote took almost as long as it took me to read the first book. The book is a series of post cards and letters between Sabine and Griffin. One page will show the front of the postcard. The next page will show the back of the postcard. The postcards are art in themselves. The art is part of the story. There are also letters. One page will show the front of the envelope. The next page will show the back of the envelope. It is a real envelope. The letter is inside and it is pulled out to read. It feels like being part of a real correspondence. Reading someone's mail. The book could be read in 30 minutes. That said, it is not about reading. It is about experiencing the relationship. They talk about the drawings. To be part of the story I needed to go back and look at pictures.
Book 1 is done. If I had Book 2 with me, it would be done too. I am forcing myself to savor these books. To enjoy the sweet story. Too often I read books quickly. I am so anxious to see how it ends, I do not enjoy the journey to get there. Maybe that is why people read the end first. Is it Old Lady?
To buy the trilogy is very expensive. Not sure why. I bought each book. They were $12-$14 each. I need to order Book 3.
I give the book a 4. I would have given it a 5 but I want room to increase if need be. Very cool concept. Give the books a look. Check them out of a library (if you don't mind sharing germs). Do not miss this experience.
