Disclaimer: This blog is going to make The Page Turners freak out. Please do not freak out. It is not a reflection on us. It is about needing more book talk time. I apologize in advance for how mad you will be at me.
I have been invited to attend a local book club in my town a few times. Never had the time to do it. My commute left me too exhausted to take part in local events here in town. I am making up for that now. This week I attended a local book club. It is held at the library. Our beautiful library. I don't check out books. I am still able to appreciate how great our library is. I used to check out books on CD. I have also taken my grand children several times. It used to be a carriage house. Now it is a lovely library. Upstairs there is a meeting room. Brick walls, high ceilings, great room!
To appease my PT friends I will say that meeting where there is food and wine, is way awesome. Nothing enhances a book discussion like a nice glass of wine. Who am I kidding, a Cosmo works too. Right Old Lady? Talking about the food is almost as good as talking about the book.
There are several retired teachers in the book club. My favorite teacher of all time is in the club. She is the person that invited me. I was intimidated to voice my opinion amongst this very teacherish group. I looked around and did not see any red markers or grade books. Decided I could throw my opinions out there. I loved the book. It was a great book to discuss. The descriptions in it were marvelous. Old Lady it did not have an ending that went Bang! You would not have liked it. I would give the book a rating of 4. Great read!! I could not put it down.
Here is a big difference in this book club and The PTs. They do not rate the books. What??? How do you know how much a person liked a book if it is not rated. They did not rate the discussion. Once again, how do we know how discussion worthy the book is without a rating.
They had a list of questions but it was only loosely used. People randomly threw out questions. Like what do you think the title meant? That is a great question. One that the PTs need to incorporate the next time we meet. (We will meet again. Knock it off.) I'm not going to lie, I like the organization of the PTs. Tru Stories mentioned maybe we just take organization a bit far with our club. I don't think so. They have their books picked all the way to May. People just throw out a suggestion and it is picked. What if the greatest book of all times is published between now and May? Will I go again? Yes! Great discussion.
What I miss most about Page Turners is being able to discuss books daily. I miss having people to talk to about books. Huge downside to working alone. I still wish I could get a book discussion happening in Coco's. Not necessarily a book club. More like a weekly time people can come in just to talk about books. Might give that a try.
Page Turners - You will always be my #1. Love and miss you guys daily!! Read Wish You Well by David Baldacci. It is a good book. Just not a BIG ending.
