February Book Club

Last week we had our February meeting. I am not going to lie, I did not think this was a good pick for our meeting. I have read a few of Emily Giffin's books and enjoyed the books. I just did not think it was "book club" worthy. I mentioned earlier, I can be a snob about reading. I was concerned love the one you're with, was too light of a read for book club. I could not imagine questions from this book providing a deep discussion like the club has been used to.
I read the book. Enjoyed the story. Still doubtful this would make for an interesting meeting. Our hostess picked a more upscale restaurant to meet than we have previously used. Meals were going to be more expensive. My plan was to get a nice salad. Another member changed my plan. If I was going to be in a restaurant I do not go to often, I was going to experience what they had to offer. My choice was marinated sirloin. No regrets! We had six members attend the meeting. We usually eat and chat, (not about work), and when most of us our done, the discussion begins.
Some members write lengthy answers to the questions before the meeting. Some members write short notes, some read the questions and wing it at the meeting. If I have time and am very excited about the questions, I write answers before the meeting. This was the case for the February meeting. The discussions were not just about the book. Our discussion touched on what constitutes an affair, when does betrayal start, romance, first loves, falling in and out of love. If we were all the same age and had the same life experiences, this discussion would be quick and boring. The broad range of ages always brings different views to the table. Add to that some are more romantic, some are divorced, some long time married, some have a bitter view of relationships. Every question can evoke a different answer from each member.
Lesson learned for me. It is not just about the book. The questions make or break the meeting. Our rating system is 1-5, 5 being the best. The book I would rate a 3. The discussion a 4. For a big book dork like me, it is hard not to rate every discussion a 5! If you are looking for a book that is a lighter read, this is a good pick. It has a happy ending depending on who you are cheering for. Some afternoon, curl up on the couch, open the drapes, let the sun in, and lose yourself in a cute story.
To Page Turner's February hostess, great job. We loved the food. The ambiance was wonderful. It was a quiet place for a relaxing discussion. Took the club to a new level of sophistication. As always, everyone had a fantastic time. We left excited for our next meeting. See you in March!
