Nook or Not

Today I went back here. Yes, again.

To get this.

And some of this. While I was there, I wondered about this.

The Nook. I tend to shy away from new fancy electronic devices. I am not one of the first people to buy a electronic item because it is new on the market. I own a cell phone, I text, I just got DVR, obviously I like the computer. Once I have the items, I usually fall in love. When I first heard of The Nook and Kindle, I was in shock. I like to think of myself as a purist when it comes to books. Nothing new and fancy for this girl. Give me my books. (Reminder: I'm an addict.) I like to browse for books, buy books, hold books, see them on my shelves. I have many bookmarks, like to find special things to use as bookmarks. To me reading is not just something I do, I want to experience everything I can. There was a time I only wanted hardbacks. Course I have bought hundreds, if not thousands, of paper backs. Everything changed for me when I discovered quality paper. I LOVE quality paper. I like the size. The books are not as heavy and straining on my wrists. Don't laugh, when you read as much as I do, heavy books take a toll. While I am reading I like to feel the paper. Quality paper is not just a name, it is a fact. The paper feels richer. What I really love is slick paper. Like going to book heaven. (Wow, I sound like a huge dork!)

What could possibly make someone like me consider a Nook? In the last 6-7 days, I have purchased about 15 books. That is obsessive even for me. I am on a book binge. Don't look down on me. I needed the books. It is over. Not going to buy anymore books until I read what I have. Judging will not help. Anyway, a Nook costs about $259. That sounds high. On my latest book binge I have spent about $200. All of those books would have cost less to put on the Nook. The most expensive book on Nook is $9.95. On some books I would save $10. The Nook would be paid for in a few months. A huge savings would come just from not walking in Barnes. I do not walk into a bookstore and buy one book. Today I tried. I bought 5. Filling my Nook on-line would save me from seeing a display and being sucked into binge buying. Don't be fooled by those friendly book sellers. They know what they are doing. They are there to sell. Sell they do. All that sounds good, saving money all over the place.

The next reason is saving space. I do not like to get rid of any of the books I buy. When I moved a few years ago, I got rid of several bags of books. I still hurt from it. Do not want to go through that trauma again. I have one room for my books. The shelves are usually stuffed, stacks on the floor, desk, in the living room, bedroom. Books everywhere. A Nook can hold hundreds of books, HUNDREDS.

For the time being, I am not ready to make the jump. I feel like I would be turning my back on who I am. I am reader. I still need books to read.

All in the same day the sun has been shining, the weather is feeling very spring like, and I discover Grammy has her own blog devoted to reading. I've died and gone to Heaven, haven't I?

My thoughts on electronic reading devices are changing daily. At first I thought it was another sign of society's spiral downward. The joy of reading surely could not be the same without the feel and smell of a book in hand. I'm starting to be swayed though. A co-worker of mine who is an avid reader like you recently received her Nook. She love, love, loves it. I have a feeling you would too. I will give you this warning I received from another co-worker's husband (who happens to be a manager at rival Waldenbooks): The Nook has been known to spontaneously explode in the reader's hand. :)

Welcome to the world of blogging!

Welcome Mrs. I am certainly not at the same level as you & the Enforcer. I'm giving it a try. Hope you enjoy it.
