Tonight was our Page Turner meeting. The book was, Hungry For Happiness by James Villas. This book started out slow for me. The grammer was terrible. I could hardly read it. I could not get a clear picture of the characters in the book. Hard for me to read when I could not visualize the story.
The first chapter I was complaing to myself, this is not a book club book. It is just a story. A lame story at that. Being a dedicated Page Turner, I kept going. The story just got better and better. About half way through the book I had an epiphany about the book. It all came together. All through this book I knew we were going to have a GREAT discussion. And we did.
The story is about weight loss. At least on the surface. A woman has gastric banding surgery. She comes from a family of obese women. She wants to break the cycle and lose weight. She says it is for health reasons and to look good.
It is also about Loretta starting a catering business and watching it grow. I would say it is about reaching her goals but she does not have set goals. The moral of the story is, do not get so caught looking for happiness that you do not life your life. Loretta was missing so many positive things in her life. She kept thinking if I get this, I will be happy. Maybe if I get this, I will be happy.
The Old Lady watched Oprah today. (Another Oprah lover.) She said someone on the show said if you are part of a club that meets once a month the happiness you get from that is worth more than the happiness received from two months of salary. Or, real happiness is better than monetary happiness. We sure felt that at the meeting tonight. Part of the book discussion. Also part of the discussion of how we all feel at on book club day.
There was discussion on changing the Old Lady's name. Some think it makes the Old Lady seem old. I will say it again. It is about wisdom. You know how they will say someone is an old soul? The Old Lady is not an old soul. She is very young at heart. But she has wisdom and life experiences. She is always good for a great quote or a good story. Being older is not always a bad thing. The Old Lady she gets life. She can handle what life throws her. Even when life throws her a curveball, she can get through it. I would rather have the Old Lady blocking for me than a young kid. She has moves. In her imaginary life, The Old Lady likes to call herself Trixie. So think of what a Trixie looks like. Got it? Imagine that as the Old Lady.
I should have just given the Page Turner members numbers instead of names. It appears we are still searching for a name for Easy Rider. I would be happy to take suggestions. Here is a description. You do not need to know her to play along. If a name comes to mind, please submit it. There will be no prizes but I will blog about the winning name and the person that picked it. Easy Rider is still a youngster. She is soon to be 25. She is trying to find her true self. She picks some good role models to guide her through life. She is setting goals for herself and going for them. She loves her Harley but you would not look at her and say, bet she has a Harley. She is a small town girl. (Many of us are.) She is close to her family. I would like a name that goes along with her being on a life journey. Like a Columbus of her soul. We really need a good name.
The newest member of The Page Turners is a good friend of mine. We go back to about 1982. She is very introverted. She is very smart. Not a joiner at all. This was her third meeting. She is one of those people that always looks good. She has classic taste. In her clothing and her decorating. She is really starting to jump in and feel comfortable. I am so happy about that. One of the many interesting things about our group. Watching people get to know each other on this level. I cannot come close to thinking of a name for her. I know her so well, cannot come up with a blog name.
Here is another problem with my blog names. Rapunzel cut her hair. Really? Numbers are looking good. One for the oldest member in the club and go up from there. Easy Rider would be 8. Looking better and better. Note to Rapunzel: the hair is great!!! What a wonderful change.
I gave the book a 3 rating. I gave the discussion a 4. It was a good discussion. Everyone was talking at once. It just feels comfortable and energizing! You are right about that Old Lady. Involvement with people, way better than material things. Except maybe books.

In my world, you can not change your blog-name... unless you are Warhol in the Comment section.
You get your name and it sticks.
One day, someone gives you a new bike and it has the name of some old Cubs player from the 30's painted on the side.
