Four of a Kind by Valerie Frankel

I went with the Old Lady to Barnes last week and picked up a couple of books to read.  I felt like I needed to be able to look at covers.  Hoped to find something really good.
The first book I read was The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender.  It started out strong and then took a dive.  I rated it 2.  A very disappointed 2.
The second book I picked was, four of a Kind by Valerie Frankel.  I really enjoyed this story.  It reminds me of how we came together in the book club.  Different personalities with unique thoughts.
This story is about four women that meet through their children attending the same upscale private school.  Bess decides to form a Diversity Committee.  She says it is for the school.  At the meeting she admits it is just as much for her.  She wants to be around different people.
Bess is a beautiful, picture perfect housewife.  Robin is a bohemian single mom.  Carla is an ambitious African American doctor.  Trying to do what is right for her family.  Alicia is the scholarship Mom.  She struggles to make ends meet.  Her husband is unemployed.  It would appear that these women will have nothing in common.  Their first meeting starts out awkwardly.  To break the ice Bess suggests they play Texas Hold em.  They do not bet money.  They play for intimate secrets about their lives.  Through this unique game the women loosen up and begin to learn about each other.
The women never do get around to organizing an event for the school.  The do learn what they have to offer each other.  Their friendship grows.  It was an interesting read.  Unique personalities in the book.  Not completely predictable.
I am going to rate the book a 4.  I needed a good read.
