Jersey Girl told me about an interesting book she read. She passed it along to me to read, Secret Sisters by Joni Rodgers. I know I saw this book a few times and almost picked it up. Has a great cover. And as I have said before, I do judge a book by it's cover. This was such a unique story. It is a story about family. Two sisters and a sister-in-law. The three of them suffered terrible losses and are on personal journeys to find themselves or rediscover where they belong.
Pia is dealing with the loss of her husband. This loss caused her to lose a sense of who she was. She had an amazing career. After her husband died she gave up her career and started staying home more and more.
Lily caused the death of her niece and was serving time in prison. While she was in prison Lily searched for answers to her life in the bible and by reading. She tried to make plans for her future.
Beth is trying to live with the loss of her daughter. She works in a funeral home. She helps people work through their grief everyday. She hides behind her religion.
This book is like three separate stories. There is very little connection between this family. They suffer tragedies that they face alone. They have very little contact with each other. It is so interesting the way the author weaves all these separate stories together.
I reread the ending three times. It surprised me so much. The middle got very odd. Jersey Girl warned me about that. I feel like it was filled with symbolism that I missed. The strange middle part of the book would have to be Rated R. I am not sure it needed to be there. That is where I think I am missing symbolism. Or maybe it is what it is.
I had a hard time rating this book. I went between a 3 and a 4. I decided to rate it a 4. The ending was just so interesting. I love a unique ending.
